Khalifa Al-Hitmi, (1961), a Qatari FIDE Officer, President of QCf and organizer.
Vladimir Dimitrov (1968), a Bulgarian Grandmaster.
Stelios Halkias (1980), a Greek Grandmaster who was the bronze medalist at the European U12 championship in 1992.
Aram Gazarian (1983), a Russian Grandmaster.
Tatania Kosintseva (1986), a Russian Grandmaster and Woman Grandmaster. A two-time European women’s champion and three-time Russian women’s champion.

DEATHS

Henry Bird (14.07.1830-1908), an English player, theorist, and writer.

CHESS EVENTS

1950 According to the regulations approved at the 1949 GA in Paris, the participants of the Candidates Tournament would be the five winners of the Interzonals together with the participants from the match-tournament of 1948 and R. Fine USA. However, the American players canceled out because the State Department refused to grant them permission to travel to Hungary. Also, Max Euwe had to decline.
Given the situation, FIDE decided to include in the list of participants the four players who took 6th to 9th places at the Interzonals. The Candidates Tournament started with 10 players in Budapest.
