Daniel Harrwitz (1823 – 09.01.1884), a German Master who lost a match in England to Howard Staunton in 1846 at odds of a pawn and two moves and drew a match with Adolf Anderssen.
Markus Stangl (1969), a German Grandmaster.
Nikolaus Stanec (1968), an Australian Grandmaster who was 10 times Austrian Champion.
Yury Shulman (1975), a U.S. Grandmaster and coach born in Belarus who won the 2008 US Chess Championship

1940 Norwegian King Haakon and government fled to England.
1945 American soldiers liberated 31,601 in the Dachau, Germany
