Winter, William (11.09.1898 – 19.12.1955)
English International Master (1950). Chess author, he was the editor of the chess columns of the newspaper Daily Worker and Manchester Guardian, chess bulletins.
In the period of the 1920-30s, he was one of the strongest English chess players and the winner of the British Championship in 1935 and 1936.
Best results: London 1927, 6th-7th; British Open Championship 1934, 1st; Lodz 1935, 5th-6th; Scarborough in 1938, 1st.
In the famous radio match against USSR in 1946, he defeated David Bronstein (game 1).
A participant in four the Olympiads between 1930 and 1935.
Teacher and author of Chess for Match Players (1936), Kings of Chess and The world chess championship : 1951; Botvinnik v. Bronstein (with R. G. Wade).
