Russian Grandmaster (1961). Chess theorist, author of a row of new continuation in the Spanish Opening, Indian Defence, English Opening and other openings. Chess Journalist. Editor of the chess column of the newspaper Vechernaya Moskva. World Senior Champion in 2005. Six times was the champion of Moscow: in 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1972 and 1978.
As a member of the Soviet team twice was the winner of the Students’ Team Olympiads in 1955 and 1956.
Best results: Manila in 1974, a top international tournament, where he finished ahead of Petrosian, Larsen, Portisch, Ljubojevic, Gligoric, Andersson…Winner at Moscow 1961 and 1986, Belgrade 1961, Berlin 1962, Varna 1964 and 1971, Polanica-Zdroj 1965, Reykjavik 1968, Skopje 1970, Prague 1979-80, Delhi 1986, Athens 1987, Budapest 1989 etc.
Coach of the USSR Students’ Team in 1961, coach-consultant of Karpov in the championship matches at Baguio 1978 and Moscow 1984-85. A coach of the Hungarian team in 1963, the Mongolian team in 1967, the Polish team in 1972, Sri Lanka team in 1980 and the Indian team 1985-86.
Author of a book in Russian on Chigorin in 1972.
