Torre-Carlos-RepettoPhilippine Grandmaster (1974). National Champion in 1974 and 1976. He is the first Asian player who obtained the title of the International Grandmaster. He worked for several years with Bobby Fischer. Started to play chess at the age of 5. Many times he was the Champion of the Philippines. He played in five FIDE Zonals: shared 13-14 places at Leningrad 1973, was the sixteenth in Manila, finished seventh in the Rio de Janeiro Interzonal in 1979. He shared the second place with Portisch in Toluca in 1982 and became a Candidate. In 1987 at Zagreb he finished seventh. In the 1983 Quarterfinal Candidates’ match, he lost to Ribli by 4-6. He participated in the second USSR vs the Rest of the World in 1984 and scored 2 points out of 3 against A. Sokolov. Won or shared first in Torremolinos 1974, Jakarta and Manila 1976, ahead of Karpov, Ljbojevic and Browne, Jakarta 1978, Manila 1979 ahead of Olafsson, Jakarta 1979, Baguio 1980, Medina del Campo 1981, Hong Kong 1982, Jakarta Zonal 1987, Lugano 1988.  Other results: Biel Interzonal 1985, 4th; Brussels 1986, 3rd Biel 1988, 3rd. In a match, he drew with Short 3-3. in 1988 in Biel. After a long interruption, he won the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2008. He has played very successfully in all the Olympiads since 1970.
