Toran Roman (08.10.1931 – 01.10.2005)
Spanish International Master in 1954 and International Arbiter in 1957. Author and journalist. Vice-President of FIDE 1982-90 and President of the Spanish Chess Federation for many years. Was the chairman of the appealing committee during the Chess Olympiad in 1984, the championship match Karpov-Kasparov in 1984-85 and 1985. Champion of Spain of 1951 and 1953. He participated in five Olympiads from 1958-74. Best results: Beverwijk 1953, 3rd-6th; and 1956, 4th-7th; Gijon 1954, 1st; Montevideo 1954, 4th; Torremolinos 1961, 4th-7th; and 1962, 4th. He is the author of many chess books, including the monograph Genius of Modern Chess, devoted to the chess art of Bronstein, published in 1953. Also was editor of the chess magazines Ajedrez and Ocho-Ocho. Published also La Defensa Holandesa (1958), Torneo de Candidatos (1965), 200 Problemas de Ajedrez (1999).
