Brazilian Grandmaster (1986). FIDE Continental President 1994-96. Best Brazilian player for nearly two decades (1980-2000). Panamerican Youth Champion in 1975. Brazilian Champion in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Best results: winner of gold medals for the best score at board 1 of the Panamerican Team Championship 1985 and in the 1992 Olympiad at board 2. Won or shared first in Luanda 1980 and 1981, Amsterdam B 1984, Dutch Open Championship 1985, Zenica 1986, Porto Velho 1988, Sao Paulo Zonal 1989, Linares (MEX) 1992, Sao Paulo Zonal 1998 and Brazil Open Championship 1999.

A participant in the Olympiads between 1980 and 1998, then in 2006 and in the Interzonals of 1979 and 1982.
