Stoltz Gösta (05.05.1904 – 25.07.1963)

stoltz_gostaSwedish Grandmaster (1954). A car engineer by profession, and periodically was a chess professional. He was the champion of the country five times in the period of 1927-1953. Nordic Champion in 1947 (joint). Results in the international tournaments: Stockholm 1930, 2nd; Stockholm 1934 and 1937; 3rd; Gothenburg 1931, 1st; Prague 1931, 1st and 1946, 2nd; Copenhagen 1934, 2nd; Munich 1941, 1st; Stockholm 1948, 1st; Beverwijk 1946, 2nd. At the beginning of the 1930s, he played some matches and beat Isaac Kashdan by 3½-2½, Ludwig Rellstab by 2½-1½, Erik Lundin by 5,5-4,5 and Rudolf Spielmann by 3½-1½. In 1931 he defeated Salo Flohr by 4½-3½. Lost three matches to Salo Flohr in 1931 by 2½-5½, Rudolf Spielmann by 2½-5½, Aron Nimzowitch by 2,5-3,5 in 1934. Finally, he drew with Guideon Stahlberg 3-3 in 1931. At the end of the 1940s, he took part in the FIDE Zonal Tournaments in Helsinki 1947, where he was equal first and later in Marianske Lazne 1951 when he shared third place. In the Interzonals in Saltsobaden 1948, he finished eighteenth and in Stockholm 1952, was the sixteenth. A participant in nine Olympiads as a member of the national team between 1927-39, 1952 and 1954, where he won four medals including one individual gold in 1931. He was a player of a bright combinative style and could attain even more success, but he was addicted to drink, and maybe that prevented him from possible achievements.
