English Grandmaster (1993), journalist and author. British Champion in 1995. Bronze medal at the World U16 in 1989.

Best results: won or shared first at Capelle la Grande 1991, Copenhagen 1992, Budapest 1993, Cuxhaven 1994, Cannes and Isle of Man Open 1995, Ischia 1996, British Championship 1997, Hastings 1997-98, British Championship 1998, Wageningen Open, Olso Open, Sants Open 2011.

He has participated in the World Team Championship in 1997 and the Olympiads in 1996 and 1998.

The author of The Slav, Semi-Slav (1998), Tips for Young Players (1999), Queen’s Gambit Declined (2000), Chess with Matthew Sadler (2013), and Chess for Life (2015).

A member of the team which won the European Team Championship in 1997. He was awarded a gold medal for the best performance at board 4 in the Olympiad of 1996 and gold for the best performance at board 4 in the European Team Championship in 1997.  Wageningen and Sants Open.
