Rosenthal Samuel (07.09.1837 – 12.09.1902)

Rosenthal-SamuelFrench chess player born in Poland. One of the strongest in the country in the second half of the nineteenth century. Chess theorist and teacher. Editor of the chess column of the magazine Le Monde Illustré 1885-1902.

In 1863, he left Poland for France and became one of the best players in Paris. He won the Café de la Régence championship in 1865, 1866, and 1867. In the 1867 Paris tournament, he finished ninth and seventh in 1878, he was in the eighth-ninth place in Baden-Baden 1870. His best achievement was his fourth place in the Vienna tournament in 1873. He was also In 1887, he tied for the fifth-seventh place in Frankfurt. In 1869, he lost two matches to Neumann (+1 –3 =1) and (+2 –4 =1). In 1870/71 and he won a match against Wisker (+3 –2 =4). In 1880, he lost a match against Zukertort (+1 –7 =11) in London.
