Richter Kurt Paul Otto Joseph (24.11.1900 – 29.12.1969)
German International Master (1950). Author. Since 1929, Richter participated in several German Championships. His most successful year was 1935, when he won first place with Efim Bogoljubow at Berlin.
Richter played on the German Olympiad Team in 1930, 1931 and 1936. He was a sharp attacking player.
Best results: Bad Nindorf 1934, 2nd; Podebradi 1936, 8th-9th; Stuttgart 1939, 2nd; Munich 1942, 5th; Berlin 1948, 1st.
During the Second World War, he became a chess columnist for the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, and when peace came, he largely gave up play to concentrate on writing. Richter was a major contributor to Deutsche Schachzeitung in the post-war years, and published Kurzgeschichten um Schachfiguren (1974) and Hohe Schule der Schachtaktik (1952). He wrote, in fine style, about the kind of brilliant tactics that are found in his own play.
The several opening lines that are named after Richter are all attacking lines for white that he played and analysed.
