Serbian Grandmaster (1981). Yugoslav Champion in 1995. Bonze medalist at the European U20 in 1977.

Best results: first or shared first at Pecs 1980, Novi Sad 1981, Polanica Zdroj and Vienna 1982, Bor 1985, Djakarta and Pucarevo zl 1987, Zenica 1989; the equal second at Novi Sad 1984 and at Cannes 1986, but perhaps his best result was equal fourth at Belgrade 1987.

Popovic played a drawn match (4-4) with Maya Chiburdanidze in 1986, beat Ivanovic (4-2) in 1995.

A participant with the Yugoslavian national team in four Olympiads between 1986 and 1994 and a member of the Yugoslavian team which took the silver at the 1989 World Team Championship.
