O’Connel Kevin (28.08.1949)

Irish FIDE Master, author and journalist. President of FIDE Zone 1 (1978-1994), Chairman of FIDE’s Computer Chess Committee (1982-1990). A member of FIDE’s Qualification Commission since 1978, he was Chairman (1990-1994) and Chairman of the Titles and Ratings Committee (1994-2002).

O’Connel published approximately 28 books, 500 magazine articles and 2000 or more newspaper columns.

Introduced (then in partnership with David Levy) the electronic chess board display system in 1986.

Known as a chess collector, he sold his impressive chess collection in 2000. He is now living in France.

Author of : The Games of Robert J. Fischer (with Robert Wade 1972), The Complete Games of Bobby Fischer (1992), Les parties d’echecs de Bobby Fischer, Payot (1974 and 1993), Todas las Partidas de Fischer (1973), How to Play the Sicilian Defence (with David Levy 1978), Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games, (Volume 1 1485-1866 with David Levy 1981).

A participant in the 1998 Olympiad.

Peak rating: 2350 in 1993.
