Danish Grandmaster (1994). Danish Champion in 1996, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2008, runner-up in 1991. Several times Danish U20 Champion.

Best results: won or shared first at Pinsk GM 1993, Asker GM 1997, Norwegian Open Championship 1999, New York Open 2000, North Sea Cup 2001, Politiken Cup 2001, Jonsson Memorial Open 2001, Samba Cup 2003, Siegeman & Co 2004, Smartfish 2005 and Fibertex 2006 and Politiken Cup 2008, NH Chess Amsterdam 2009.

A participant in the 1999, 2001 and 2004 World Championships and in all Olympiads between 1994 and 2008 (except 1998).

Coach of Viswanathan Anand since 2007 and then of Magnus Carlsen since 2013.

With a height of 1 meter 98 cms, is the tallest Grandmaster in the world’s top 100. Nielsen has also got a good character and is quite unassuming.

A well-known opening expert, he is the co-author with Carsten Hansen of The Sicilian Accelerated Dragon: Improve Your Results with New Ideas in This Dynamic Opening. and The Semi Slav – A Grandmaster’s Guide for the tournament player (2016).

He married Lithuanian GM Victoria Cmilyte in December 2013.

Peak rating:  2700 in 2010, he is the current best Danish ranked player and was ranked thirty-eighth on the world list in 2004.
