Murray Harold James Ruthven (24.06.1868 – 16.05.1955)
English chess historian, mathematician.
His interest in the history of chess began in 1893. In 1897, Baron T. von der Lasa encouraged Murray to write a history of chess. To accomplish this work. Murray learned Arabic and collected thousands of sources. He started to publish articles for BCM form 1901.
Later in 1913, he published his major work History of Chess, where he wrote the origins of chess and its development in Asia and Europe. He made a conclusion about the origin of chess in India, and then the appearance of different kinds of game in Japan and China.
His other book “Short History of Chess” was published after death in 1963.
