Chilean Grandmaster (1986), FIDE Senior Trainer (2016). Chilean Champion in 1985. The holder of the first Grandmaster title awarded to a Chilean player. Chilean Champion in 1981. Panamerican U20 Champion in 1980 and bronze medalist at the World U14 championship in 1980.

In matches, he lost to Viktor Korchnoi 4-2 in 1988, to Anatoly Karpov 3-1 in 1994, beat Viktor Korchnoi 3-1 in 1991, Bent Larsen 2,5-1,5 in 2008 and drew with Boris Spassky 3-3 in 1989.
