H.J.J Slavekoorde (1907-1970), Dutch player, journalist, FIDE General Secretary and FIDE Honorary Member.
Claude Goumondy (1946), French chess composer.
Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant (1968), Scottish Grandmaster. She was Schottish Champion, Women Soviet and Georgian Champions.
Ainur Sofieva  (1970), Russian Women Grandmaster .
Grzegorz Gajewski (1985), Polish Grandmaster who was Polish Champion in 2015 and seconded V. Anand against M. Carlsen at the 2014 World Chess Championship.

CHESS EVENTS

1923 In Paris at the Cercle des Echecs du Palais-Royal, Georges Renauld won the first French Chess Championship.
1924 
In Paris, at the end of two days of meetings under the Presidency of Mr. Pierre Vincent of France  and Mr. Stick van Linschoten of Netherlands, the delegates of eleven countries agreed to create the “Federation Internationale des Echecs”. The Bureau invited the federations of Germany, Austria and the Soviet-Union that were not present in Paris to join them. The Bureau was in charge of developing the Statutes of the “Federation Internationale des Echecs” using as a base the Draft published in 1914 by the British Chess Federation.
1932 The President received one of the first rubber chessboards manufactured by the company Pirelli of Milan. The price was 50 Liras for 10 boards.
1950 FIDE approved the organization of the first World Junior Championship to be held the next year in Birmingham, England.

WORLD EVENTS

1333 Wars of Scottish Independence: Battle of Halidon Hill: The English win a decisive victory over the Scots.
1588 Anglo-Spanish War: Battle of Gravelines: The Spanish Armada is sighted in the English Channel.
1845 Great New York City Fire of 1845: The last great fire to affect Manhattan began early in the morning and was subdued that afternoon. The fire killed 4 firefighters, 26 civilians, and destroyed 345 buildings.
1900 The first line of the Paris Métro opens for operation.
1963 Joe Walker flies a North American X-15 to a record altitude of 106,010 meters (347,800 feet) on X-15 Flight 90. Exceeding an altitude of 100 km, this flight qualifies as a human spaceflight under international convention.
1980 The 1980 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad, were opened in Moscow, Soviet Union.
1985 The Val di Stava dam collapses killing 268 people in Val di Stava, Italy.
1997 Provisional Irish Republican Army resumes a ceasefire to end their 25-year campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland.
