Jean de Villeneuve-Esclapon (1860-24-11-1943), a French chess composer.
Hans Hilmar Staudte (18-01-1911 – 21-01-1979)  a German composer and player.
Igor Platonov (1934-13.11.1994), a Ukrainian–Soviet Grandmaster and coach.
Alexander Moroz (1961-17.01.2009), a Ukrainian Grandmaster, International Arbiter who was the president of the Ukrainian Chess Federation.
Alexander Khalifman (1966), a Russian Grandmaster, a coach and writer who became the FIDE World Champion in 1999 after winning the first K.O World Championship in Las Vegas.
Alisa Galliamova (1972), a Russian International Master and Woman Grandmaster. She is twice the runner-up at the Women’s World Chess Championship, in 1999 and 2006.
Danilo Milanovic (1974), a Serbian Grandmaster.

DEATHS

John Wisker (30.05.1846-1884), an English player and journalist who was one of the world’s ten best chess players (c. 1870).
Israel Albert Horowitz (15.11.1907-1973) an Amercian International Master who was the editor of the American magazine’Chess Review’ and the author of many chess books.
