Marin learned the moves at age five, he became the Romanian Student Champion in 1985, which was his first important accomplishment as a young player.

A three-time Romanian Champion (1988, 1994 and 1999). Marin has represented his country in ten Olympiads, winning the bronze medal at board 1 at Thessaloniki Olympiad in 1988, and has qualified twice for the interzonals (1987 and 1990). At the Yerevan Olympiad in 1996, he won the second best game prize. Other successes include two firsts at Goteborg and Roumania, plus several victories in strong Spanish open tournaments.
