Best results in the international tournaments: Sukhumi 1970, 2nd; 1st, Amsterdam 1974, 1975, 1st-5th; Hastings 1979-80, 3rd; Novi Sad 1983, 1st; Oslo 1984, 2nd-3rd; Frunze 1985, 1st, Tal Memorial (RUS) 1992, 1-3rd.
In the middle of the 1990s he, together with his wife, Marina, became the producer of a popular TV chess program which was being aired until 2015.
A chess player with an original positional style, he was second to Anatoly Karpov in the World Championship matches in 1985-86 and to Garry Kasparov between 1991 and 1994.
Not active since 1999. Best ELO: 2550 in 1991.
