Ljubojevic Ljubomir (02.11.1950)
Serbian Grandmaster (1971) living in Spain. In the period 1970-80 was one of the strongest players in the country and in the world.
Best results: his first successes were the second place in the European Youth Championship at Groningen and shared the first-second places with Parma in the International Tournament in Sarajevo in 1970. That year he came in first at Zurich and Cacak together with Planinc. In 1971 he made an early remarkable achievement, having taken the first place with Panno, followed by Portisch and Larsen at Palma de Mallorca. The same year he came in second in Vrnjacka Banja and received the IGM title.
In 1972 he performed first in Olot, was equal first with Ivkov in Caorle, and in 1974, was first at Orense. His best result in Yugoslavian championships: he shared the first-second place with Srdjan Marangunic in 1977, and was the first in 1982. As a member of the Yugoslavian team, he participated in seven World Chess Olympiads between 1972 and 1986, and showed his best result in 1972 at Skopje, scoring 15,5/19 and being the first on the third board.
In 1974 he has a car accident and was seriously injured. During the recovery period, he reconsidered his style of play. He played two matches at Milan, first with Lajos Portisch, which he lost by a score 1,5-2,5, and with Tigran Petrosian. He played brilliantly having won contests in Las Palmas ahead of Mihail Tal, in Manila followed by Lev Polugaevsky and Bent Larsen in 1975, at Wijk aan Zee in 1976, where he was equal first with Frederik Olafsson in front of Mihail Tal, in Titovo Uzice in 1978, in Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires equal with Korchnoi in 1979, in Buenos Aires he shared the first-fifth places with Ulf Andersson, Yasser Seirawan and Bent Larsen, in Brasilia in 1981, in Linares equal with Robert Hubner in 1985, in the New York Open where he shared the first-sixth places with Yasser Seirawan, Larry Christiansen, Sergey Kudrin, Nick de Firmian, Maxim Dlugy, at Reggio Emilia equal first with Ulf Andersson and Oleg Romanishin in 1985-86, in Amsterdam in 1986, in Belgrade, followed by Jan Timman and Alexander Beliavsky, and in Brussels equal with Garry Kasparov ahead of Anatoly Karpov in 1987, in Vina del Mar in 1988, in Barcelona equal with Garry Kasparov in 1989. In 1991 he performed first in Reggio Emilia followed by Rafael Vaganian and Boris Gulko, in 1993 in the Monaco rapid he was first.
He took part in four Interzonal Tournaments, his best result was a shared fifth-sixth place in Manila in 1976. In 1979 in Belgrade he played a match with Gligoric and won with a score 5,5- 4,5. In 1987 in Hilversum, he played a match with Timman and lost with a score 1,5-4,5; he met him again for a match in 1989 in Delft. In 1993 in Linares he drew a match with Illescas Cordoba with a score 4-4. In 1994 in Monaco he lost to Piket, scoring 2-6.
Peak rating: 2645 in 1983, he was then the third world ranked player.
Ljubojevic is a chess player of sharp combinative style. His play is characterized by constant searching for the initiative, creativity in attacks and stubbornness in defense. However, he never was a Candidate for the World Championship.
He retired from active chess in the 1990s but he is still commenting games in some top tournaments.
