Kupchik Abraham (15.03.1892 – 26.10.1970)
Kupchik was born in Brest-Litovsk and came to the United States in 1904. He was an outstanding Master for many years. Kupchik worked as an accountant for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and lived in New York.
Best results: Manhattan Chess Club Champion eleven times, the New York State Championship twice (1915 and 1919), the National Chess Federation title at Bradley Beach 1928, and the Western States Championship or U.S. Open in 1925.
His best performances were at the two Lake Hopatcong tournaments of 1923 when he shared first with Marshall and in 1926 when he was second to Capablanca.
A member of the U.S. Team that won gold at the Olympiad of 1935. At the same Olympiad, he was awarded a bronze medal for the third best individual result at board three.
Kupchik drew in a match in 1925 with Carlos Torre with the score +1-1=4. He was also a member of the U.S. team that played the USSR by telex in 1945. He scored ½:1½ against Vladimir Makogonov.
