Kmoch Hans (25.07.1894 – 14.02.1973)
American International Master (1950) and International Arbiter (1951). Born in Austria, he moved to the Netherlands in the 1930’s and then settled in the USA in 1947. A journalist and an author, he wrote regular articles for Chess Review.
In 1922, he was allowed to participate in the International Masters Tournament of Vienna but finished last. Kmoch won in Derecen 1925 and was joint first in Vienna 1929 and Ebense 1930.
A participant with Austria at the Olympiads of 1927, 1930 and 1931. Kmoch served as Alexander Alekhine’s second in his world championship matches against Efim Bogoljubov and in the 1935 title match against Max Euwe.
The author of Die Kunst der Verteidigung (1927), Rubinstein’s Chess Masterpieces (1941) and Pawn Power in Chess (1959).
