Judd Max (27.12.1852 – 25.05.1906)
An American chess expert born in Poland who immigrated to America in 1862. Judd was also the U.S. consul in Vienna.
Best results: Philadelphia 1876 and Vienna 1897, 2nd; Chicago 1874, 3rd; Cleveland 1871, 4th and Western Chess Congress, 1st.
In 1881 Judd lost a chess match against George Henry Mackenzie held in St. Louis for the US chess Championship +5 -7 =3, in 1887 he defeated Albert Hodges +5 -2 =2 in a non-title match held in St. Louis, In 1888, in 1890 Judd defeated U.S. Chess Champion Jackson W. Showalter in a match in St. Louis +7 -3 =0 but did not claim the title, two years later in 1892 Judd lost the return match to Jackson W. Showalter +4 -7 =3, in 1899 he lost a match against Harry Nelson Pillsbury in St. Louis +1 -4 =0 and in 1903 he won the Western Chess Congress. Judd played in six American Chess Congress tournaments.
