Johner Paul and Hans

Johner-PaulStrong Swiss chess players/brothers in the first half of the 20th century. Paul, 10.09.1887-25.10.38, Zurich.  Paul Johner was Swiss Champion six times between 1908 and 1932. In 1908, 1928 and 1932 he shared the title with his brother Hans.

Best results in the international tournaments: Copenhagen 1916 and 1924, 1st-2nd; Berlin 1917, 1st-2nd; Gothenburg 1920, 1st; Triest 1923, 1st-2nd; Berlin 1924, 1st and Debrecen 1925, 2nd -3rd.

HansHans, 07.01.1889-02.12.1975.  Hans Johner was International Master (1950), a problemist and the director of the Zurich Philharmonic Orchestra. He was Champion of Switzerland twelve times (three tied) between 1908 and 1950.

Best results: Le-Ponte 1930, 1st; Bern 1932, 7th-8th and Aarau 1935, 1st.

A participant in the Olympiads of 1927, 1931 and 1956.  For 57 years he was editing a chess column in the Neue Zurcher Zeitung.
