Hansen Sune Berg (21.04.1971)

Danish Grandmaster (1998). When Sune Berg Hansen won the Excelsior Cup in Gothenburg in 1998, he became Denmark’s seventh grandmaster. The following year, he tied for first place with Peter Heine Nielsen in the Danish championship but lost in the playoff. However, he won the championship in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012.

In 1999, he also won the Hamburg Open, Gausdal and Aarhus In 2000, after ending among the top three in the Nordic world cup qualifying tournament in Reykjavik, Berg Hansen qualified for the New Delhi world championship tournament. This adventure ended in the first round, where he lost to Russia’s Andrei Kharlov (0.5-1.5). He won also the Bangkok Open in 2010 and Politiken Cup 2015.

For several years, Berg Hansen has been Danish daily Politiken’s chess columnist. He is also a frequent speaker and often gives chess exhibitions, simultaneously playing a number of opponents.
Nowadays, he spends more time promoting chess than he does playing international tournaments.
