Danish Grandmaster (1985) and Correspondence Grandmaster who was European Junior Champion 1981-2 and World Junior Champion in 1984. Danish Champion in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1993, and 1998. The winner of the Nordic Championship (1983, 1995, 2003).

Best results: winner at Esbjerg 1983, Glausdal GM in 1983, Borgarnes 1984, Politiken Cup 1989, Tastrup 1992, Vejle 1994, Malmoe 1994, Reykjavik 1995, Jerusalem 1986, 2nd and Wijk aan Zee 1991, 2nd.

In matches, he beat Knaak 2-0 in 1984 and Plachetka +5=1 in 1985.

Hansen has his own chess column in the Danish daily Jyllands Posten, and works on a regular basis as an opening expert for ChessBase.

A participant at the Olympiads from 1984 until 2000.
