Gufeld Eduard Yefimovich (19.03.1936 – 23.09.2002)

GufeldUkrainian Grandmaster (1967) who played in eight USSR Championships between 1959 and 1972.

Best results: 1st at Gori 1971 and Tbilisi 1971, equal 1st at Tbilisi 1974 and clear 1st at Tbilisi 1980, 1st at Havana 1985 (VIII). On October 26,

On October 26, 1995,  he immigrated from the Georgia to California. He played in the US Senior Open in Las Vegas (tied for 1st place with Arnold Denker). In 1999 he won the American Open.

Gufeld was an appreciated coach and worked for many years with Maya Chiburdanidze and the Women Soviet team. In his day, he defeated Mihail Tal, Boris Spassky, Viktor Korchnoi, David Bronstein (6 times), Lev Polugaevsky (4 times), Mark Taimanov (3 times), and Vasily Smyslov. He drew with Tigran Petrosian, Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Efim Geller, and Paul Keres.

Gufeld had written more than 100 chess books, which he sold 3.5 million copies worldwide.
