MARSHALL CHESS CLUB

The second oldest and the most authoritative chess clubs of the USA, founded in 1914 in New York by a certain number of amateur players, who met regularly to play chess in one of the Manhattan’s restaurant For fourteen years its players met in various rented quarters until, in 1928, one of the wealthy members, Gustavus Pfeiffer, donated $30,000 to buy a house situated at 23 West 10th Street. In 1962 the club moved to the Henry Hudson Hotel. Traditional opponents in many team competitions of the “Manhattan Chess Club”. Its members were Fine, Evans, Shervin, Mednis, Soltis and others US masters. The US Champion Marshall, who was living in an apartment on the first floor, ran the club for many years; after his death in 1944, his widow Caroline took over the management.
