EVANS GAMBIT

Evans William Davies (1790-1872) a Welsh postman and player invented the Gambit in 1824 (C51): 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4. The gambit was in fashion in the mid-1850 and at least 20 times in 1889 and 1892 by Steinitz against Chigorin and Gunsberg.
