DEFLECT

 

A tactical maneuver in the middle game used to force a piece (often the King) to move to a less suitable square.

In the position arising from the game Reshevsky-Fischer at Palma Interzonal in 1970, Black played 28…Qd4 forcing the King to go to h1 then Qf2 threatening if Rxf2, Re1 and mate the next move.
