clock 2Sandglasses were used in London 1822 to enforce the time limit of 20 moves in 2 hours. T.B Wilson (England 1843-1915) was the inventor of the first chess clock, the original ‘tumbling clock’ made by Fattorini (England) was introduced at the London Tournament in 1883. Veenhoff (Netherlands) invented the push-button type clock around 1900. C. Wilson (USA) produced a chess clock which incorporated the one clock movement for two dials.

The first electronic clock appeared in Russia in 1964 but it was only in the middle of the 80’s that the digital clock starts to be popular. In the 90’s FIDE approved the DGT clock produced by a Dutch company which replaced progressively all mechanical clocks.clock 3
