The precursor of modern chess goes back to c. AD 620 and was invented in the North-West of India. The pieces were named Rajah (for King), Mantri (for Minister, Fers and later Queen), Gaja (for Fil and later Knight), Asva (horse and later Knight), Rat-ha (Chariot and later Rook) and Pedati (Infantry and later Pawn) which moved like the pawn but could not move two squares initially and if reached the 8thrank at to be promoted as Minister. The board of 64 squares was known as ashtãpada.
