Garcia Gonzalez Guillermo (09.12.1953 – 26.10.1990)
Cuban Grandmaster (1976) and professional chess player. Cuban Champion in 1974, 1976 and 1983.
In 1974 he played with success on top board for Cuba at the World Students Team Championship at the Teesside. But his best performance of the year was his equal 4th with Ulf Andersson, Bent Larsen and Lev Polugayevsky with 9.5 points in Las Palmas. This was half a point more than the norm required for the grandmaster title. He failed to repeat this norm at the Arrecife de Lanzarote tournament that followed on immediately after Las Palmas and came equal 6th with Lubomir Kavalek, achieving an international master result only. He fared even worse on his first appearance at Hastings 1974/5 where he came equal 12th with Istvan Csom. But in 1976 he came equal 1st with Kennet Rogoff and Gudmundur Sigurjonsson at Orense (Spain) and this gave him his second grandmaster norm and the title. He won at Plovdiv 1975 and was equal 1st at Zurich 1975, Havana 1985 and 1986, Pontevedra. Perhaps his best result was 1st in Lisbon 1986 (IX).
In 1990 he died in a traffic accident. Since then a memorial tournament is regularly organized.
A participant in 7 Olympiads between 1974 and 1988.
