Filip Dr. Miroslav (27.10.1928 – 27.04.2009)

FilipCzech Grandmaster (1955), International Arbiter (1978), writer and journalist. Filip was the first Czechoslovakian player to play the Candidates’ Tournament in 1962 and 1966. The was the Czechoslovakian Champion in 1950, 1952 and 1954.

Best results: Marianske Lazne 1957 and 1960, 1st; Sofia 1957, 1st; Buenos Aires 1963, 1st; Alekhine Memorial 1959, 4th; Baden Vienna 1961, 2nd; Santa Fe 1961, 2nd; Mar del Plata 1961, 2nd-5th; Buenos Aires 1961, 1st; Maroczy Memorial 1961, 2nd-3rd and Rubinstein Memorial 1979, 2nd.

Filip was a participant, playing three times at board one, in all Olympiads between 1952 and 1974.  He was selected by FIDE to be the Chief Arbiter in six subsequent World Championship contests, including Anatoly Karpov vs. Viktor Korchnoi in Baguio 1978.

He conducted the chess column in the Prague daily sports paper Denik Sport with great distinction. The Author of The Candidates’ Tournament of 1956, The World Championship of 1978 and The 1982 Olympiads.

Peak rating: 2500 in 1977.
