Falkbeer Ernst Karl (27.06.1819 – 14.12.1885)

Falkbeer-Ernst-KarlAustrian Master and journalist who founded the famous Wiener Schachzeitung in 1855. Falkbeer lived in England from 1855 to 1864.

Best results: He tied first with Johann Lowenthal at Birmingham in 1858 but lost the play-off (+1 −3 =4) to finish second. In 1856, he went to London where he lost two matches against Henry Bird 1856 (+1, =0, -2).

He was also the author of a popular variation of the King’s Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 e4). He edited a chess column in The Sunday Times from 1877 to 1885 and in the Neue Illustrierte Zeitung from 1877 to 1885.
