Best results: winner or shared first at Vienna championship in 1875, the German Championship at Leipzig in 1879, Wiesbaden 1880 and Vienna in 1896
Also equal 2nd with Joseph Blackburne, James Mason, Siegbert Tarrasch and Max Weiss at Hamburg 1885.
He lost a match against Emanuel Lasker (+0=3-2) in 1890 but held Nelson Pillsbury to 2½-2½ (+0=5-0) in 1896.
He became ill while playing in Berlin in September 1897, then withdrew after 12 rounds. He died two weeks after the tournament ended.
