Mathematician and author.

Best results: Moscow championship 1973, 1st; Polanica Zdroj 1973, Soviet championship, 5th-7th; 1st; Wijk aan Zee II 1975, 1st.

A popular lecturer around the world he was also the author of many articles on chess theory and practice. He was the coach of many well-known former Grandmasters like Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Evgeny Bareev, Nana Alexandria, Sergey Dolmatov, Artur Jussupow, Luke van Wely, Joel Lautier and Etienne Bacrot.
