Russian Grandmaster (1982) and FIDE Trainer. World Junior Champion in 1978, vice European Junior Champion in 1979. A participant at 5 USSR championships with a victory in 1979.
Best results: winner or share first at Amsterdam 1979, Bucharest and Kralove 1981, Frunze 1983, Barcelona 1983 and a fine one in Tallinn in 1985. He also won Sochi and Klapedia in 1988, Moscow, Clermont-Ferrand and Hastings in 1989, Reykjavik in 1990 and Anibal-Linares in 2000. His fifth place in the Manila 1990 Interzonal made him Candidate, but after a close-fought match in Wijk.
