Gert Henrik Ligterink (1949), a Dutch Grandmaster, author and journalist.
Sergey Makarichev (1953), Russian Grandmaster and journalist.
Michael Adams (1971), the best English Grandmaster for two decades.
Murtas Kazhgaleyev (1973), Kazakh Grandmaster living partly in France.
Igor Ivanov (08.01.1947-2005), Canadian Grandmaster born in Russia. In 1980 he became famous for defecting USSR when he was traveling from Havana to Moscow.

DEATH

Efim Geller (08.03.1925-1998), a Soviet and Ukrainian Grandmaster. He won the Soviet Championship twice and was the Senior Wolrd Champion in 1992.

CHESS EVENTS

1993 After a five hours of debate on the breakaway by G. Kasparov and N. Short from FIDE cycle, the FIDE GA by 56 to 19 ratified the Executive Council’s decision to withdraw services including ratings from the two.
1998 Sadvakasov (KAZ) and Hoang Thangh Trang (VIE) became the World Junior Champions for Boys and Girls in Calicut.

WORLD EVENTS

1800 – The United States Congress holds its first session in Washington, D.C.

1947 – American scientists John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain observe the basic principles of the transistor, a key element for the electronics revolution of the 20th century.
1969 – Cold War: Negotiators from the Soviet Union and the United States meet in Helsinki, Finland to begin SALT I negotiations aimed at limiting the number of strategic weapons on both sides.
2006 – Ferenc Puskás, a famous Hungarian footballer and manager died (b. 1927).
