Mohamad Al-Modiahki (1978) a Qatari Grandmaster 1998). Top player of Qatar for many years and Arab Champion, he is now the organizer of the Qatar Open.
Laurent Guidarelli  (1981) a French Grandmaster who was French Junior Champion in 2001. Coach and teacher.
Bela Khotenashvili (1988),  Georgian Woman Grandmaster who became World Girls U16 Champion in 2001 and Georgian Women Champion in 2012.
Darwin Laylo (1980), a Filipino Grandmaster who was Champion of Philippines in 2004 and 2006.
Leonid Shamkovich (1923-22.04.2005), a Russian-born American Grandmaster and chess writer.
Evgeny Shaposhnikov (1981), a Russian Grandmaster who was World U12 Boys Champion in 1993.
Nigel D Short (1965), an English Grandmaster and journalist. He defected from the FIDE World Championship cycle in 1992 to play the PCA World Chess Championship Match against GarryKapsparov in London in 1993. He is living in Greece.
Mihail Suba (1947), a Romanian Grandmaster living in Spain. Author and coach. Three times national champion, he shared first at the World Senior Championship in 2008.
Georgy Timoshenko (1966) Ukrainian Grandmaster 1994. Coach. Champion of Moscow in 1988.
L’Ami, Alina (1985) Romanian International Master and Woman Grandmaster. World U10 Girls Champion in 1995 and European U18 Girls Champion in 2002. Married to the Dutch GM Erwin L’Ami.
Sedina, Elena (1968), a Ukrainian-Italian Woman Grandmaster and International Master.  PhD in chess training methods at the Kiev Institute of Physical Culture and Sport in 1994. Ukrainian Women’s Champion in 1988 and in 1990. She plays for Italy since 2004.

DEATH

Vladimir Savon (26.09.1940- 2005) a Ukraine-Soviet Grandmaster 1973 best known for his stunning result at the 1971 USSR Championship where he took first place, undefeated and 1.5 points ahead of a 21-player field that included world champions VassilySmyslov, Mikhail Tal and, Anatoly Karpov.

WORLD EVENTS

2009 Air France Flight 447 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. All 228 passengers and crew are killed.
2009 General Motors files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It is the fourth largest United States bankruptcy in history.
