Colle Edgard (18.05.1897 – 20.04.1932)

Colle-EdgardBelgian master and a player of enormous combinational ability. Unfortunately, ill-health was his constant handicap, as he was always on a diet. Colle won 6 times the Belgian championship.

Best results: Scheveningen 1923, 3rd; Hastings 1924, 3rd; Paris 1924, 3rd; Amsterdam 1926, 1st; Weston-super-Mare 1926, 2nd; Meran 1926, 1st; Hastings 1927, 2nd; Scarborough 1930, 1st; Liege 1930, 3rd;Rotterdam 1931, 2nd.

Later in 1932, Colle was operated on for a gastric ulcer but after the surgery, he died.

He is also known for the Colle-opening: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 e6 4.Bd3.
