American player born in Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied medicine at the Vienna University then emigrated in 1904 to the USA where he became a citizen in 1910.

Best results: 1st Western Open Champion 1909, 3rd at New York behind Marshall and Capablanca,  3rd New York Master 1915, 3rd Rice Memorial 1916 where he was the only competitor to win a game from Capablanca, 1st New York States championship, 1st Rochester 1917 and 1stat Manhattan Chess Club 1918, New York 1920, 1-2nd.

Chajes played two matches against Dawid Janowski: he lost in Havana in 1913 (+0 −2 =1), and won in 1918 in New York (+7 −5 =10).
