Canal Esteban (19.04.1896 – 14.02.1981)

CanalPeruvian Grandmaster (1977) who got the title at eighty-one years old! Canal left Peru as a 13-year-old student and traveled all around Europe, spending time in Spain, France and Belgium before arriving in Germany in 1914. He learned chess there and became the champion of Leipzig in 1916.He moved to Italy in the 1920s and remained there.

Best results:  2nd Trieste 1923, 2nd Meran 1926, 2nd Budapest 1932, 1st Budapest 1933, 1-2 Reiss 1936 and 2nd at Venice 1947. He played also in few Olympiads at first board.
