Calvo Minguez Ricardo (22.10.1943 – 26.09.2000)
Spanish International Master (1973). A medical doctor, journalist, he was also a prolific writer and a chess historian.
A participant for Spain in five Olympiads from 1966 to 1978.
His best tournament result was a second place behind Anatoly Karpov at Montilla-Moriles in 1976.
In 1987 after the publication of one article ‘ One bridge too far’ in the magazine New in Chess, he had some problems with the FIDE, which declared him to “persona non grata” and banned him for a year. That was the end of his professional chess career. Calvo died of cancer of the esophagus.
