Blumenfeld Benjamin Markovich (24.05.1884 – 05.03.1947)
Soviet player born in Belarus, chess theorist and writer. A lawyer. Made a great contribution to the opening theory with deep analysis published in Soviet chess magazines. He was the initiator of the Blumenfeld Gambit (E10).
One of the first who began to study the psychology of chess game. He received a doctorate for a thesis on the nature of blunders in chess.
Among his best achievements, he finished 2nd in Saint Petersburg 1905 behind Gersz Salwe and above Akiba Rubinstein and in 1907 he tied for 2nd-3rd with Georg Marco, behind Mikhail Chigorin, in Moscow.
