PALMA de MALLORCA
The main town in the Balearc Island, in which international tournaments and Candidates’ Matches were organised annually (except 1970) in the town of Palma on the Majorca Island during the period of 1965-74. In 1970, the city hosted the Interzonal which saw the victory of Fischer. Later, several International Opens were organised, and in 2004, the Olympiad was held with the success of Ukraine and China at the Women’s Competition. The most successful were Larsen, who performed first in 1967 and 1969, second-third in 1968, Korchnoi who took first place in 1968 and shared first-third in 1972, O. Panno who shared first place in 1971 and 1972.
The winners of the tournaments were: 1965 Klaus Darga, Alberic O’Kelly, Arturo Pomar; 1966 M.Tal; 1967 Bent Larsen; 1968 Viktor Korchnoi; 1969 Bent Larsen; 1971 1-2. Ljubomir Ljubojevic and Oscar Panno; 1972 1-3. Viktor Korchnoi, Oscar Panno, Jan Smejkal, 1989 (Open) Boris Gelfand, 1991 (Open) Illescas, 1992 Vladimir Tukmakov and Guillermo Garcia.
