MOSCOW CHAMPIONSHIPS

The first championship was organised in 1899 by Solovtsov and Grigoriev, when the title Moscow Champion was at stake. The winner was Solovtsov. Before 1917, the championships were not held regularly and did not have the status of official tournaments. Twice the winners were Nenarokov and Goncharov, and between 1914-18, the championships were not held. The first Soviet Championship was organised in 1919-20 and was won by Alekhine, but he played hors concours, and the title was awarded to Grekov. Hereafter Moscow championships were held regularly. More successful were Grigoriev, Rumin, Belavenetz in the 1920s, Averbakh, Smyslov, Bronstein in the 1940s, Bronstein, Vasyukovand, Petrosian in the 1950s-60s, Bronstein, Vasiukov in the 1960s, etc. Bronstein and Vasiukov became the champions of Moscow six times, Smyslov, four, and Averbakh, Grigoriev, and Rumin, four times.
The Championships of 1967 and 1971 were held in the Swiss system, and all the rest in round robin.
