MADRID

The capital of Spain hosted several memorable international tournaments in the 1990s and a rapid match USSR-Rest of the World in 1988, involving some of the best players of the world at that time, but chess in Madrid has a longer history going back to 1575, with a series of games played at the court of the Spanish King Phillip II. The event is considered to be the first international tournament in the chess history, in which Leonardo and Boi took part against Lopes and Seron and won most of them.
