CARLSBAD (Karlsbad)

City of the Czech Republic renamed Karlovy Vary after WWII where four major tournaments were organized during the first part of the 20th century. In 1907 (20.08-17.09) Akiba Rubinstein finished first with 15 out of 20 followed by Geza Maroczy 14½. In 1911 (21.08-24.9) Richard Teichmann won the tournament with 18 out of 25 ahead of Akiba Rubinstein and Carl Schlechter with 17 points.In 1923 (28.04-20.05) Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov and Gaza Maroczy shared the first place with 11½ out of 17. In 1929 (20.07-28.08) Aron Nimzowitch won the 22 players all-play-all tournament with 15 out of 21 ahead of José Raúl Capablanca and Rudolf Spielmann. Much more recently, in 2007, a category 17th was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first tournament. Sergei Movsesian and Rustam Ponomariov were the winners.
